Candidate: Lemonodo Oh

Good morning Mr Presiding Chairman, Members of the Second Pride 2010 Committee, Ambassadors of Second Pride and ladies and gentlemen. I am Lemonodo Oh, and I am pleased to come before you as candidate for Treasurer, Second Pride 2010.

Money in the form of charitable contributions to Second Pride 2010 are destined for Amnesty International USA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Human Rights, and this is the important justification for all the wonderful social functions of Second Pride 2010. The person who has particular responsibility for handling the money plays an important role under the Charter toward making it possible for the Committee to successfully accomplish its mission. I hope I will be that person for the remainder of the 2010 term.

When it comes to funds, the Second Pride Committee has to be seen as very safe and transparent. The Treasurer in particular has to be someone you can trust. In the next section I want to present to you what I think the Treasurer of Second Pride does as essential criteria for making your decision. I hope to be given the opportunity to accomplish all of what I am about to tell you.

The Charter calls for the Treasurer to prepare a budget, collect and pay out all funds on behalf of Second Pride. Banking of assets, bookkeeping and timely reporting are the important on-going functions the Treasurer carries out on behalf of the Committee. All contributions in cash to the Second Pride organization are in Linden Dollars and made via donation/information kiosks, which the Treasurer provides. Tangible contributions are also accepted into inventory by the avatar "Second Pride". All contributions are itemized in normal reporting. Unrestricted and sponsored cash contributions eventually reach Amnesty International minus only the expenses incurred. Sponsored cash contributions are also paid only to a kiosk, but it is important for the donor to clearly identify in a communication such as a notecard or application form such particulars as identity of the donor, transaction date, amount and the nature of the sponsorship intended. This is so that the Treasurer can prepare a detailed receipt and sponsorship records can be updated by others on the Committee. Likewise, sponsored tangible contributions of inventory goods may be made to the Second Pride avatar only, accompanied with a packing list with particulars such as identity of the donor, date of donation, certified commercial valuation and the nature of sponsorship intended so that the Treasurer can prepare a detailed receipt and sponsorship records can be updated by others on the Committee. In the interest of fairness to all, loaned or one-time use of tangible goods or services should be excluded from sponsorship consideration. On notification with such particulars as identity of donor, date of donation and declared valuation of donation, an unrestricted loan or one-time use of tangible goods or any services, the Second Pride avatar or to others on the Committee, the Treasurer provides a receipt and updates appropriate logs. There should be no refunds of cash or goods donated, particularly donations for sponsorship consideration. Usually in cooperation with others on the Committee, the Treasurer should make important decisions on behalf of the Committee to reject certain funds.
The Treasurer provides complete, timely monthly, bi-weekly or weekly records and summary for inclusion on the Second Pride website. If agreeable to the Committee in every respect, at least one staff member performs internal audit. Transaction detail data should be original, unique, sequential by date and arguably complete for each and every reporting term. A typical summary of funds includes the following information by L$, US$ (reference) and Best-Sell-Exchange-Rate (reference):
Current Receipts
(Current Expenditures)
Total Receipts
(Expenditures)
(Reserves for Anticipated Expense)
Designated Charitable Organization Net
Previously Transferred
Pending Transfer

The Treasurer also provides an accounting of all tangible assets, loans of assets and services and a listing of liabilities such as future mainland sim purchases, which the Treasurer transacts in detail through Support Ticket.

Overall, the Treasurer cooperates with each individual member of the Committee, particularly in providing prompt answers to financial questions and making the books and kiosk available as needed. All committee members should seek advice from the Treasurer about any topic containing spending or receiving of funds or the setup of rules that affect finances or inventory.

Mr Chairman, and Members of the Committee, if elected, I look forward to being trustworthy, and even dropping conflicting activities if need be to inspire that sense of trust in my dealings with each of you. In particular, if elected, I look forward to building strong bridges between my office and the office of the Membership Representative Chairperson. I look forward to diligently applying myself to each of the points I mentioned in detail, and I hope to inspire similar application of the considerable talents of profoundly committed people whom I hope to attract into service in the office of the Treasurer on behalf of Second Pride 2010.

Mr Chairman, having given you the basis for making a sound decision, I'd like to present you with an overview of my background in finance and my accomplishments.

I would like to start by mentioning that I have more than ten years experience in all offices of the board of directors of a small charitable non-profit organization in a major city. Its exhibition program permits 12 artists (individual or group) to mount an exclusive one-month show. This program is entirely supported by private contributions, common areas of adjoining sublet commercial office space and sponsored contributions from the artists.

I come from a ranching family, Calimyrna figs. Simple, highly transparent accounting was taught and I was able to help in an environment with many suppliers and employees involved in picking, dry yard, tractor and irrigation. Our ranch was model because of precise crop cultivation and careful payment of all bills, work tickets issued, or timecards accepted with vigilance toward not honoring any overcharges.

I am independent in my work and self-employed. I earned significant professional licensure through a combination of education, examination and certified years of practice and maintain my license by adhering to the associated practice act and through continuing professional education. I maintain a sole practice that manages millions of dollars in work by others on behalf of clients that encompasses all or most of the following: contracts with client, bookkeeping, planning, documents, submittals, entitlements and certain administrative tasks on behalf of the client in his or her contract with others.

Final background, perhaps you recognize me as Second Pride 2009 Building Chairperson. I sought to manage in such a way that, given direction and basic site plan of the festival grounds encompassing six sims, only the builders were involved in the starring roles of detailed site design, and the actual design and construction of an excellent array of facilities. My managerial functions included scheduling, close supervision and follow-up that permitted artistic freedom of expression of our festival theme last year, Second Pride, LGBT, Love, Peace, Unity and Equality.

I see the office of the Treasurer, while not as extensive in participation as Building, does involve similar managerial skills to those I just mentioned. I see creating through consensus of the Committee a cooperative, collaborative environment where each person is independent, truthful, vigilant and unassailably trustworthy. Members of the Committee, I believe this kind of Treasury assures you of peace of mind to accomplish your profound responsibilities, knowing the money is safe.

Mr Chairman, Members of the Committee, Ambassadors and ladies and gentlemen, I have offered you a clear picture of what I will do and how I will do it if elected. Please weigh all of this in your decision. While I hope you find this presentation complete and comprehensive, I look forward to providing you with adequate interpretation in response to any questions you may have. On this basis of this written statement, I ask for your vote.

My question to you is this: this position you may take on is a time consuming position that takes not only knowledge, but dedication. We as a group need to feel secure with the decision of the person to take on this roll. These special elections take time and energy that is time away from the cause of SP. Let us know that you are not only willing, but open to suggestion, criticism and praise that are demanded in this position. Thank you, Philip Eubanks

Thank you for raising these important points. You mention the time element of the elections. I am grateful for your indulgence for the relatively small period it takes to make an important decision to vote for the best Treasurer. Had it not been granted, I would have had no opportunity to present the statement above. I believe it sets a high standard of trust for the Treasurer, regardless of whom you choose.

As to your question about dedication, and openness to suggestion, criticism and praise may I offer an interpretation of this passage:

Mr Chairman, and Members of the Committee, if elected, I look forward to being trustworthy, and even dropping conflicting activities if need be to inspire that sense of trust in my dealings with each of you.

I provided tireless service in 2009 and attended all meetings or was excused, including many meetings that were canceled for lack of quorum. I believe this record indicates I can effectively make myself available for duty.

As to the difficult to assert openness to suggestion, criticism and praise, I bring up a couple of examples of these under challenging circumstances. I was independent in taking individual responsibility for the direction of the whole Committee when the kiosk provided by others wasn't displaying the total correctly and it looked like we were going to call it good. I was careful to act as a brake, but was somewhat criticized for it, as it was outside my area of responsibility. I knew an incorrect total could only be sign of a serious bug in the scripts. While of course I relaxed my stance somewhat, I noticed the kiosk was quickly fixed.

In another instance, on the eve of the opening, the leadership of the Committee was directly challenged over one of our builds, saying it appeared we were obviously condoning socially unacceptable behavior. Members of my team previously anticipated the need for possible replacements, and I ultimately fully agreed with the Committee's suggestion to use our reserves. There was some unavoidable hard feeling over loss of the original build, but it is now clear the replacement served us well.

Lemondo,

As you know I used SL Transaction viewer to load, collect, filter and report all transaction data form the Second Pride avatar. And I used it to make the financial reports that can be found on our website.

Question 1:
What will the general membership notice as a difference between the reporting up till now and the way you plan to do it? Or will you continue in the same way I did it?

Question 2:
What will you do or not do to insure the privacy of the general membership?

Question 3:
How will you insure that the financial reports you make are accurate and what other form or public reporting, then is already in place at the moment, will you use to insure this?

Thank you for these incisive questions. I will frame my interpretations in a general way, but I do propose to pursue these ideas if elected.

  1. Transaction detail data should be original, unique, sequential by date and arguably complete for each and every reporting term.

A typical summary of funds includes the following information by L$, US$ (reference) and Best-Sell-Exchange-Rate (reference):
    Current Receipts
    (Current Expenditures)
    Total Receipts
    (Expenditures)
    (Reserves for Anticipated Expense)
    Designated Charitable Organization Net
    Previously Transferred
    Pending Transfer
The general membership should notice no initial difference in reporting, because it is only appropriate to continue an existing, reliable accounting system using the exact same tools and methods. The Treasurer may test alternative systems or format reports from existing methods of data collection somewhat differently, but only in parallel with the existing system. If the Committee chooses to adopt a new fully-tested system, the general membership might notice slight changes.

  2. The Treasurer's transaction reports (where this would obviously be an issue) are accessible only on secure website. The Treasurer should develop a Privacy Policy for for Second Pride whose aim is to protect financial information. An enumeration of important elements appears below*. Systems in place provide for dissemination of summary financial data on the secure website. The Treasurer should provide a written policy for making current summary financial data available at all Second Pride events in the form of poster, and ensure one or more kiosks with accurate display of total funds collected is present.

  3. The Treasurer should seek out a variety of means to assure accuracy of financial data.
If agreeable to the Committee in every respect, at least one staff member performs internal audit.
The Treasurer with cooperation from the Committee should implement a recent proposal for outside Arrow audit to lay this concern to rest.

* Privacy Policy outline
    • Second Pride must tell you the kinds of information it collects on an avatar and how it uses that information.
    • Second Pride at this time does not make any information it collects available to third parties. Therefore opt-out is inapplicable.
    • Second Pride takes steps under its Privacy Policy to prevent unauthorized access to confidential financial information.
    • Second Pride makes the Privacy Policy easily accessible.
    • Second Pride sanctions violations of the Privacy Policy.

Lemonodo, I have to say I'm very impressed! It's a CV that an accounting agency wouldn't shrug off.

I would however like to bring up one issue that is sticking in my mind as being important, and that is your resignation in Pride 09 so late in the build process. I think the committee and the membership need to understand why this happened because even though you do have a stellar CV and a clear understanding of the post, the resignation sticks in my mind at least as an issue needing clarification.

Can you please clarify and amplify what actually happend so we can get a clearer understanding? My impression is that you (personally) don't generally walk away from the task at hand (given your exemplary experience listed!) without good reason.

Thank you!

To both the candidates, where do you see Second Pride in 10 years time?

Thank you for your question. I hadn't applied the kind of thinking it takes to answer a question like this as part of the bid for being your Treasurer at all, and of course it must be done. I created an on-the-spot video where I give you my first answer.

It is difficult to foresee what the impact an immersive environment with haptics will be. Is Second Pride then going to become fringe like a comic book conference or cosplay, full of only extremely unusual people crazy enough to want to do it, or is it still going to touch the hearts of a broad spectrum of LGBTIQ people, furries, elves, faeries, friends, family, allies and more as it so beautifully does now? Is the scale going to morph from micro numbers (60 agents per sim, $3M/season) to... umm... numbers shall we say?

I know that you have been active in SP for awhile and have contributed a great deal of time and obviously have the qualifications....BUT as important a post as the Treasurer is, I don't think resigning in the middle of ones term is a good thing ...except under special circumstances> Please explain the circumstances of your resignation last year???

Doc Spad wrote:...I don't think resigning in the middle of ones term is a good thing ...except under special circumstances...

Not to put to fine a point on this... but I did resign for the simple reason that (certain committee members) the committee where more arguing with me than doing there job. I simply stepped aside so they could started to do there job again. (not saying if I think their doing it good or bad, just wanted to give them a change to do it.)

Why you want to force this point with one of the candidates is odd. But I guess you have your reasons for wanting to tare open old wounds.
